Rabbi Rosen is on to something here. But there is far too much money involved in marriages for the Rabbanut to give it up to those who want an alternative. And without external pressure (Diaspora Jewry) the situation is not likely to change soon. That said, Leiberman promised his voters civil marriage. He delivered on a joke of a civil marriage bill that may serve as many as 20 couples/yr.
If the voting constituency from the FSU, which generally votes their security interests rather than social interests, insists on civil marriage, it may happen if the Haredi do not carry the coalition power next time around that they usually have.

There have been Haredi MKs who accept civil marriage. Why? They feel that such a union, if dissolved, would not require a Get. Thus Mamzerut would not be a concern. They would still, most certainly, keep the marriage registration process withing the Rabbanut so as not to lose the bucks.

While you are anything but amateur (not only do you make a living writing, but you are an excellent writer), separating Israel from Judaism is no easy feat. I happen not be the classic religious Zionist - that is I do not believe that the State has inherent holiness or that it is necessarily a tool or harbinger of the coming of Messiah. However, there are plenty of Jews who do. And they are more likely than me to be in those pro-Israel protest groups. Moreover, even I believe firmly that Israel (its modern borders and more) is Jewish.

AEPi is famous for doing bad things to pledges. Some think they deserve a pass on despicable behavior. Alcohol is not an excuse. To harm and torture another human being is disgusting.

From observing a class (yes just one class) I feel the biggest threat is the lack of student knowledge about the issues and their unsophisticated ability to parse the "facts' presented in class.

The teachers are able to “slide” false facts into discussions and assignments by bundling them with plausible sounding comments.
I found that obvious anti-Semetic comments by students were minimized by the teacher so as to appear unbiased.
There needs to be a concerted effort by Jewish organizations to be pro-active and not just reactionary. When you are reactionary, you allow others to control the discourse and you legitimize their comments by replying. It’s impossible to prove a negative.
Their needs to be a concerted effort to promote Israel and its positive actions plus make certain the west understands that Israel is the only democracy in the region that allows Arab, Jews and Christians to govern together.
